Project Overview
This Carmel property looks straight out at the Pacific. The owners wanted to upgrade the deck with a railing that kept the ocean view completely open, met current code, and could stand up to salt air without constant upkeep.
We installed our ThinLine cable railing system built entirely from stainless steel – 2×2 inch square powder coated 304 stainless posts and a 3×1 powder coated 304 stainless top rail, tensioned with 1/8 inch 316L marine grade stainless cable.
For most of our cable railing projects we recommend a powder coated aluminum frame with marine grade stainless steel cables. That combination gives the best cost to quality ratio and is, in most cases, a maintenance free system. However, where there is high salt content in the air – as there is here – aluminum and stainless steel in contact with one another can produce galvanic corrosion. For any project in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean we recommend a full stainless steel system to eliminate the dissimilar metal interaction. Whether that is the more economical powder coated 304 stainless used on this project, or higher grade brushed 316 stainless steel, either is the best long term option for a coastal cable railing.
