Project Overview
The stair at the centre of this Mill Valley home is a floating run of pale oak treads with no risers, set against a full-height window wall looking out to the bay. Any conventional balustrade would have buried the thing it was meant to protect.
We used our stand off pin system here – laminated glass panels carried on polished stainless pins fixed through the stair stringer, with a slim round handrail mounted directly to the glass. Fascia mounting keeps the pins off the treads, so nothing sits in the walking line.
Because the glass is held from the side rather than sitting in a shoe, the panels appear to float alongside the treads. Daylight from the window wall passes straight through to the floor below, which is exactly what an open stair is for.
