Project Overview
This Aptos horizontal railing wraps the entry deck and stairs of a home set among cypress and eucalyptus a short way from the coast. The deck is the first thing a visitor sees, so the railing had to carry the same modern line as the house rather than sit apart from it.
We installed our RectRail horizontal railing system – 1 inch by half inch flat rectangular aluminum bar running between 2×2 inch square aluminum posts in matte black powder coat, finished with a 2×4 Ipe hardwood top rail. The Ipe cap warms the black metalwork and picks up the decking underfoot.
Flat bar suits a coastal Aptos site. There is no solid infill for the wind to catch, powder coated aluminum does not corrode in salt air, and the horizontal lines make a wraparound deck read as one continuous run rather than a series of separate sections.
