Project Overview
This redwood deck and stair run sits under mature oaks and willows in Portola Valley, stepping down the slope from the house to the garden. The owners wanted the railing to meet code on a long stair run without turning the deck into a cage of balusters.
We installed our ViewLine glass railing system – tempered glass panels carried on square posts with exterior-grade clamps and a slim matching top rail. The posts and hardware were finished in bronze rather than black, so the metalwork sits with the redwood and the tree trunks instead of standing out against them.
The result is a railing that holds the line on the stairs and the deck edge while leaving the woodland visible from every position – seated, standing, or on the way down the steps. Glass needs nothing more than washing, which matters under trees that drop leaves most of the year.
