Project Overview
This Mill Valley deck sits high on a wooded slope where the wind funnels straight across it. A standard height railing would not have made the deck usable, so the owners asked for a full windscreen rather than a railing.
We designed and built a custom post mounted glass windscreen standing 6 feet tall – clear laminated glass panels carried on square metal posts in matte black powder coat, running the length of the exposed side of the deck. At that height the glass blocks the wind completely while leaving the outlook through the eucalyptus canopy untouched.
A solid windscreen would have worked just as well against the wind and ruined the reason for the deck. Glass gives the owners a sheltered outdoor room that still reads as open, and because the panels are laminated and the frame is powder coated there is nothing to maintain beyond cleaning.
