Project Overview
Perched on a spacious deck in Dillon Beach with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the Oceana residence demanded a railing solution that would preserve visibility, withstand coastal conditions, and require minimal maintenance. Given the extensive length of railing required, a cable railing system quickly emerged as the practical and aesthetic winner over a full glass railing, delivering transparency, durability, and cost efficiency all at once.
For most of our cable railing projects we recommend a powder coated aluminum frame with marine grade stainless steel cables. That combination gives the best cost to quality ratio and is, in most cases, a maintenance free system. However, where there is high salt content in the air – as there is here – aluminum and stainless steel in contact with one another can produce galvanic corrosion. For any project in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean we recommend a full stainless steel system to eliminate the dissimilar metal interaction. Whether that is the more economical powder coated 304 stainless used on this project, or higher grade brushed 316 stainless steel, either is the best long term option for a coastal cable railing.
