Project Overview
At the San Ramon Avenue home in Berkeley, the owners wanted a deck railing that combined modern styling with warmth and longevity, a railing that feels contemporary, clean, and refined, yet durable enough for years of daily use. They envisioned a design with strong horizontal lines, a sophisticated profile, and materials that stand up to weather without demanding heavy maintenance.
We used our HRK horizontal rail system with powder-coated aluminum posts and infill rails, adding an Ipe hardwood top rail to introduce a natural, warm contrast. Aluminum is a great choice for outdoor railings because it is lightweight yet strong, resistant to rust and corrosion, and stays true to its shape even under frequent exposure to weather. Meanwhile, Ipe wood is renowned for its density and durability, giving the railing a premium feel and a comfortable, natural hand-touch surface.
The horizontal ¾″ square aluminum rods draw the eye outward across the deck, emphasising width and openness rather than vertical closure. The matte-black powder-coat finish delivers a sleek, contemporary aesthetic while providing resistance to weather, corrosion and general wear, so the railing stays looking sharp for years with minimal maintenance.
